Jack Catterall: The New Welterweight Champion's Journey & Future Plans (2026)

Jack Catterall, the newly crowned WBA 'regular' welterweight champion, is a force to be reckoned with in the boxing world. His recent victory over Shakhram Giyasov in Egypt has propelled him into the spotlight, and he's not looking back. But what makes Catterall's story truly captivating is his unwavering determination and the strategic approach he brings to the ring.

A Champion's Mindset

Catterall's mindset is one of the most intriguing aspects of his journey. He embraces the role of the underdog, a strategy that has served him well. After his controversial loss to Josh Taylor in 2022, Catterall demonstrated remarkable resilience, winning seven of his next eight fights. This includes a hard-fought rematch against Taylor, where he finally claimed the title he deserved. His ability to bounce back from setbacks and maintain focus is a testament to his mental fortitude.

"I kind of like being the underdog," Catterall shared. "I'd seen a lot of predictions and we knew how good Shakhram [Giyasov] was, Olympic medallist, undefeated professional but I don't think there was anybody who could convince me it wasn't going to be my night. I never really get emotional but after the fight the emotions were shown. It's been some journey and I've enjoyed every moment of it."

The Road to Unification

Catterall's ambitions extend beyond his current title. He's set his sights on welterweight unification, a feat that would solidify his place among the sport's elite. However, the path to unification is fraught with challenges, and Catterall is well aware of the obstacles ahead. The WBA's designated 'super world champion', Rolando 'Rolly' Romero, has been inactive since defeating Ryan Garcia in May 2025, and Catterall is eager to face him for the vacant 'super' title. But until Romero returns, Catterall is open to other options.

"News is circulating now that he's going to take a fight, an interim fight or a keep busy fight in August, which is not ideal," Catterall told Sky Sports. "There's potential [for him] to get cuts, but either way I'm going to fight for that 'super' title. If not, I'm in a great division with a lot of big name fighters, a lot of titles. Nobody's unified yet so there's an opportunity to do that. There's some great fights to be made."

A Strategic Fighter

What makes Catterall truly fascinating is his strategic approach to fighting. He carefully selects his opponents, considering their strengths and weaknesses. His list of potential opponents includes the likes of Lewis Crocker, Liam Paro, Conor Benn, Devin Haney, and even Ryan Garcia. This strategic mindset is a refreshing change in the boxing world, where many fighters rush into high-profile matches without proper preparation.

"I like the winner of [Lewis] Crocker vs Liam Paro. Conor Benn, Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia, Rolly Romero - I'd fight all of them whenever. I've got my piece of the puzzle now and hopefully that brings some weight to the table, but I'm confident in making these fights and winning all these fights," Catterall added.

Looking Ahead

As Catterall continues his journey towards welterweight unification, he remains focused and disciplined. At 32, he feels better than ever, and his determination to collect more belts is infectious. With his strategic mindset and unwavering focus, Catterall is poised to become a dominant force in the welterweight division. The boxing world is taking notice, and the future looks bright for this rising star.

In my opinion, Catterall's story is a testament to the power of resilience and strategic thinking. His ability to bounce back from setbacks and carefully select his opponents is a refreshing change in the boxing world. As he continues his journey towards welterweight unification, I can't help but wonder what other surprises he has in store for us. One thing is certain: Jack Catterall is a fighter to watch, and his impact on the sport is only just beginning.
